We wish to appoint a motivated and reliable Deputy Manager to help lead a small and dedicated team delivering child centred play opportunities to children aged 4-11 in central Cambridge.

Our chosen candidate will enjoy working with children and have a good understanding of their needs and issues in order to help them to develop and thrive whilst in our care.

A sound knowledge of safeguarding is required, as well as good communication skills, understanding of Health and Safety and a flexible ‘can do’ attitude.

Job summary:                 

  • Deputise for the manager in his or her absence both at After school club and/or during Holiday club
  • Help with day to day management of the club
  • Provide play care within the framework of the club’s policies and procedures

Line manager: Club manager

Responsible for:

  • Children attending the club(members) and their parents or carers
  • Club management, club staff and volunteers

Working relationships:

  • Newnham Croft Primary School head teacher and staff
  • Childcare and play organisations (leaders of other extramural clubs)
  • Registering authorities (Ofsted, LA)

Main requirements:

  • To help the manager plan, prepare and deliver safe, inclusive, fun and creative play opportunities working within the framework of the club’s policies and procedures, and the Early Years Foundation Stage.
  • To provide comprehensive care for the children across all areas of Safeguarding and Child Protection
  • To inspire, motivate and support supervision of play workers and volunteers.
  • To provide healthy snacks and ensure that hygiene, health and safety standards are met.
  • To communicate clearly and confidently with all members of the organisation and with parents, school staff and childcare/play related agencies.
  • To undertake training when appropriate and relevant
  • To set up the play space including moving furniture and play equipment.
  • To encourage child participation in day to day running of the club and choosing play activities
  • To encourage parental understanding of the importance of play and encourage their involvement in the club.
  • Day to day administration and accurate record keeping

Level 3 Playwork, Early years or relevant Education/Childcare Qualification

Understanding the varied needs of children and their families

Experience of working with 4 to 11 year olds in a play based or school setting

Understanding the issues involved in the delivery of quality play care and the value of reflective practice

Good communication skills

Experience of day to day administration and record keeping

Ability to work as a team member and demonstrate leadership skills

Initiative, sound common sense and a can do attitude

Understanding the issues of Safeguarding and Child Protection

Understanding the importance of Equal opportunities

Sufficient understanding and use of English to ensure the well-being of the children**

Competent in using IT to safely promote Play and generate publicity for the club (website/social media)

Forest Schools training

Current 12-hour Paediatric First Aid Certificate

L2 Food Hygiene and catering Certificate

Experience of budgeting
