Our friendly team of 8 staff is looking for a Deputy Manager to join us from Monday 3rd June 2019.

The position requires an enthusiastic, caring and friendly person to work in our OUTSTANDING setting and be involved with promoting the Early Years Foundation Stage for our children aged between 1 and 3 years.

The candidate will be qualified to level 3 or above and have at least 2 years of leadership experience to support the Nursery Manager with the effective leadership of the staff team. It will involve periods of sole charge and daily contact with parents. The role will also involve being a key person and managing the smooth running of the playroom.

At ACE Day Nursery we value the importance of our community and outdoor environment. We involve the children in Forest School sessions and outings to places such as: the central library, local supermarket, church, river/duck pond, garden centre and residential home. We look after 17 children at any one time and have a free flow play environment with access to the garden.

The nursery is open from 8.30am - 5.30pm and closes over the Christmas and Easter period along with a two-week closure at the end of August. We work closely with ACE Nursery School which was founded as a parents’ co-operative in 1966.

Contract = 40 hours a week between 8.00am and 6.00pm on a shift pattern.

Deputy Manager Job Description


Reports to: Day Nursery Manager


Summary: To provide high quality care for children aged 1 – 3 years, under the direction of the Day Nursery Manager and Parents’ Committee. To actively support the work of the company at both the Day Nursery and Nursery School.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Promote safeguarding and the welfare of all the children, adhering to statutory obligations.
  2. Be responsible, alongside the Manager and Forest School Manager, for supervising staff and students within the Day Nursery, ensuring and promoting good practice in line with the policies and procedures, and to maintain the smooth running of the nursery at all times.
  3. Work closely with the Forest School Manager to manage the smooth running of the playroom, creating an inviting environment in which the children can develop at their own pace and make progress.
  4. Work closely with the Manager, Forest School Manager and staff team to provide and ensure high standards of care, learning and development are achieved for all children, in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage.
  5. Take on the role of key person and support staff with observations, assessments and planning.
  6. Provide a caring and stimulating environment in which the children are safe, thrive and learn. Empower children to think critically, to consider how they can keep themselves safe and to encourage them to build confidence to take reasonable risks.
  7. In the manager’s absence, maintain the smooth running of the nursery.
  8. Attend and lead staff meetingsand any relevant training outside of nursery hours as required.
  9. Monitor and evaluate the standards of teaching and learning through leading regular staff supervisions.
  10. Be the designated lead for Health and Safety and Behaviour Management.
  11. Place and monitor orders for art/craft and cleaning resources.
  12. Be a good role model for other staff when dealing with the children, parents/carers and outside professionals.
  13. Respect and value each member of staff and the working environment.
  14. Act as an ambassador for the Day Nursery in all external contacts with prospective parents, the local authority, early years personnel and Ofsted inspectors.
  15. Show support for committee social events throughout the year.                                       
  16. Maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  17. Have key holder responsibility for opening and closing the Day Nursery.

Witchford Rackham Pre-School is a friendly committee run organisation offering sessional provision for children term-time only. 

The Pre-School was rated as 'Outstanding’ in its most recent Oftsed report (November 2016) with the quality of teaching described as ‘inspirational'. The Pre-School is open Monday to Friday to children aged 2 ½ years until they reach school age.

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, caring and self-motivated person to join our team. The ideal candidate will hold a Level 3 qualification in Early Childhood Studies (or equivalent).

We would also look for candidates with 12 hour paediatric first aid training, basic child protection and food hygiene.

As the successful candidate will be a key person for a group of children, knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stages (EYFS) is essential.

This role is part time, for a minimum of 7 sessional hours per week 8:30am- 12:00 pm (plus meetings and key working), with potential for up to 17.5 sessional hours per week (plus meetings and key working).

We are looking to recruit a practitioner who is ideally qualified or studying towards Level 3, although we will consider strong candidates who hold a Level 2 who are willing to undertake Level 3 training.
