Investment and Growth

Fenland and East Cambridgeshire is experiencing rapid and exciting growth. There are lots of plans in place to increase housing, jobs, schools and community facilities in the area.

Fenland and East Cambridgeshire is one of 12 Opportunity Areas launched by the government in 2017. The aim of the programme is to raise education standards locally and to improve social mobility by ensuring that all children and young people in Fenland and East Cambridgeshire have access to high quality education, training and employment.

Another exciting development is the Wisbech 2020 programme which includes the Wisbech Garden Town project. With HRH The Prince of Wales supporting the plans, it is hoped that by creating sustainable growth and expanding the settlement over the next 40 years, Wisbech will benefit from 13,200 new homes and 11,000 new jobs as well as new shops, schools and public spaces.

There are also plans to create growth in March, Chatteris and Whittlesey. The ‘Growing Fenland’ project is still in the early stages of development, with the Combined Authority awarding £50,000 to each town to form different growth strategies. The aim of the project is to invest in education and skills, commercial and industrial development and new transport initiatives in order to stimulate growth and create more employment in Fenland.

The towns of Ely, Littleport and Soham have also been identified as areas with potential for growth and investment in the East Cambridgeshire Local Plan 2015, which will also bring new housing, jobs and improved infrastructure to the area.
